| being creative just comes naturally for some people and Jamey Guy was destined to be one of them. While such talent might have been expected coming from an art family in which both of his grandparents, as well as his mother, aunt, one cousin, and two sisters are artists, pure passion and an encouraging nudge in the right direction have played a significant part in what has been a successful profession for more than 20 years. Jamey was the proud owner of a camera from the early age of 5, thanks to his grandfather who Jamey jokes mainly just wanted to keep the little guy busy. It was a bond that would only get stronger. Camera in hand, Jamey would critique his grandfather’s paintings and in return, with paintbrush in hand, his visionary grandfather critiqued Jamey’s photos. Years later, a 16-year-old Jamey and his grandfather took their respective talents on the road, literally. The two spent more than three months on a road trip around the United States and Canada. Perhaps the defining moment came when Jamey’s grandfather convinced him to enter a few photo contests and he walked away with first place in color, first place in black & white and Best in Show, in addition to $400 and a white water rafting trip. Over the years, Jamey created and re-created himself always keeping in mind that he was meant to be a photographer. After enrolling at the Art Institute of Atlanta, he immersed himself in the photography community working with some of Atlanta’s top shooters and ultimately, receiving the highest graduation honor by winning the Photography Category awards exhibition at the Charles Janseen Gallery. To date, he has worked for some of the biggest ad agencies and design firms including Fallon, Fame, Martin Williams, Hunt Adkins, as well as Target, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Coca-Cola, Levis, AARP, Land O Lakes, Ganassi Racing, Sotheby's, and Christies to name a few. More notable credits include a Wheaties cereal box for General Mills, magazine assignments for Garden and Gun, Atlanta Magazine, Points North, Corporate Report, Jump, Parent Magazine, AARP and highlights from his list of portraits include: President Jimmy Carter, Rev. Al Sharpton, Bishop TD Jakes, Karl Malone, Juan Montoya, Jimmy Vasser , James Brown, Douglas Ivestor, Bobby Osbourne and Chuck James. Seems his grandfather knew something Jamey would learn for himself over the years: It is not a profession, but a calling. “Having a camera in my hands is as natural to me as breathing,” Jamey said, “It's what I do because I love it.” One look at his photos and that’s obvious. |
